The Critical Format
It's always wonderful to get the chance to go back to Eindhoven and speak with the students as part of the SOURCE lecture programme! Many thanks to the Design Academy for the invitation!

My latest lecture focused on the question of contemporary critical formats, especially looking at how mainstream online platforms are fuelling interaction and bringing authors into direct contact with commenters.

As part of the lecture, I made a small graphic study on Dezeen itself, looking at how much of the site is dedicated to press releases (grey), self-promotion (blue), advertising (yellow), opinion (green), and comments (pink).

I showed the students this image to begin a debate about the context for and function of their work on the site, as well as to demonstrate to them the importance of writing their own texts, tailored to each individual platform on which they would like to display their work.
